It's been a surreal journey for me since 'Masaan.' The way the industry has accepted me and motivated me has been amazing.
The good news for me is that I have an amazing team behind me, and they've been with me for 20 years now - almost 20 years. And they have seen me as an actress, not necessarily just a black actress. So I have been lucky enough for them to see me that way.
I've been following Jesus for 35 years. He's guided me, comforted me, encouraged me, challenged me, befriended me, and been my constant companion since November 8, 1981.
If I was concerned about being accepted, I would have been doing Ansel Adams lookalikes, because that was easily accepted. Everything I did was never accepted...but luckily for me, my interest in the subject and my passion for the subject took me to the point that I wasn't wounded by that, and eventually, people came around to me.
To work with Miss Oprah has been amazing. To have her in my corner and inspire me and uplift me has been amazing.
It's been an amazing journey. I've been pursuing a career in this industry for a long time, so when I was finally given an opportunity, I didn't take it for granted.
Within the fashion industry, being on shoots and working with agencies and other models, it's never been an issue being anything other than straight. It's so accepted within this industry. Out of every community that I'm a part of, or have been in, the fashion industry has been the most accepting. To the point where it was celebrated. I'd be on set talking about my girlfriend and someone would say "Oh, you're a lesbian! That's amazing." It's such a warm, welcoming community in that sense.
'Amazing Grace' is not a book of interviews or onetime snapshots. It's a memoir of a journey that took me into a place I had never been and took over two years of my life. I don't think the people in this book would have said the things to me that they did if they perceived me as a reporter.
I've been acting since I was 5 years old, from primary school to secondary school, did training at drama school, which was the big thing for me because they trained me, put me out into the industry.
My journey in Bollywood has been quite filmy, as it includes sleeping on railway platforms to teaching dance for a living. The journey has taught me a lot, and I am very grateful that all that happened with me. It helped me in becoming a more stronger man.
It's been 23 years since the last Swede in Formula One, so for me to be the next F1 driver at all these races around the world has been amazing.
My journey has been beautiful, more than what I could ask for. Of course there have been ups and downs but I've been fortunate and grateful for this journey. It has taught me a lot, I've grown, become a better actor and a human being.
It's been an amazing journey so far for me, in the places that I've gone and the people that I've met.
My supporters and family have limited resources, very limited resources; but the FBI has the unlimited resources of the most powerful government in the world today. It's amazing that they haven't successfully had me assassinated since I have been in here. There have been plots uncovered in the past that I know of to have me killed.
Giving back has always been instilled in me since I was a little girl. To me, it's been something that's a been part of my life.
I have often been doubted in music industry not because of my talent, but because I might not have been introduced to the game by major industry hype men, but I love being the underdog. I truly believe that god has put me here to say something and send a message to not only women but to all individuals like myself. I will not allow the politricks of the game to discourage me and keep me from the goal at hand. I will sing from my heart and leave the industry bullsh*t alone.
It's been a very long journey, and people have been immensely kind. They're not tired of watching me on television for a decade; they want to see more of me.
