A Quote by Winona Ryder

I can see it in even great actors' performances, when they're phoning it in. — © Winona Ryder
I can see it in even great actors' performances, when they're phoning it in.
Even if you see a great performance, it's not always great getting there. There are injuries... Intrinsically or unconsciously, people understand that - people see those performances, and they know there are stories behind that.
I love actors; I love seeing great performances. I just love that, when I'm seeing a performance, that inside me, I just go, 'Oh my God, how are you doing that? Where is that coming from?' Where you see an actor do something, and I can't even locate it in my own body.
Even in the early '90s, I was already starting to mix professional actors with non-actors. I always enjoyed working with non-professionals, because their performances are very natural and unaffected.
I do feel that scripts get developed now to a point where they're sort of actor-proof. If the actor is not very good, the narrative still survives because it's all in the dialogue. Not to say there aren't great performances in English-language films, because there are every year, but the 1970s were awash with great performances, and I was wondering whether it had to do with the amount of space and the amount of responsibility given to the actors.
There are some actors that are great stars and storytellers, but not necessarily good actors. I'm talking about some - not all - of the people you see in action flms or blockbusters. They're film stars, though not necessarily great actors. And there are those who are great actors, but not necessarily big film stars. Jim Sturgess is both. He's quite obviously a star, the audience likes him, he's a great storyteller and he turned out to be one of the greatest actors I've worked with as well.
Directing was a great experience, but it's terrifying to have the responsibility of carving up the other actors' performances.
Someone who directs a film, they have to see the overall picture, and they have to get the best performances out of the actors.
Great individuals and great performances build a team, which produces brilliant performances.
'12 Angry Men' has a truly great collection of actors giving fantastic performances. It's an acting masterclass.
The Old Vic has always been first and foremost an actors' theatre, a home for great talent and memorable performances.

James Gandolfini was a genius. Anyone who saw him even in the smallest of his performances knows that. He is one of the greatest actors of this or any time... A great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. I remember telling him many times, 'You don't get it. You're like Mozart.'
I've always appreciated great acting performances, but I've even learned to appreciate not so great ones 'cause it's hard.
You'll see some great performances [in Fences]. And I'm not just saying that because I directed it either! You'll see!
Actors tend to not know how their performances are going to actually be used. Even though the script says one thing, in the edit, it can be something else.
I'm not a great director or an auteur; I'm an ensemble director. I do think I can get wonderful performances out of actors.
