'Hedwig' isn't particularly based on me, but I think that it is autobiographical in terms of emotion.
Even if the experience in my stories is not autobiographical and the actual plot is not autobiographical, the emotion is always somewhat autobiographical. I think there's some of me in every one of the stories.
'Hedwig' was born in '94. I was thinking of a theater piece; Hedwig was one of the characters.
Art is based on emotion, but being macho is based on ego; the wall protecting that emotion.
'Hedwig' is not autobiographical, but what she goes through is clearly a big metaphor. She doesn't want to be what she is, but she comes to an understanding that what happened to her has actually made her whole.
I buy based on emotion, because I am fascinated with an object that I simply cannot live without. Although I often end up acquiring two or three works by an artist who particularly interests me, it's more for fear that a single one might get too lonely.
People ask, 'Are your things autobiographical?,' and I think, no, they're not autobiographical directly, but of course my life has informed my work.
I think it helped me like myself more, playing Hedwig.
It's much easier for me to think in terms of character movement and emotion and story rather than, 'What are some wacky hijinks we can throw together?'
All art, in spite of the struggles of some critics to prove otherwise, is based on emotion and projects emotion.
A story about my life should not be particularly interesting, but it is: it's just about me and some kids who didn't know how to talk to each other. It's personal but not autobiographical.
I do think that it is impossible for us to think only in terms of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and not think in terms of what's happening with Syria or Iran or Lebanon or Afghanistan and Pakistan. These things are interrelated. And if we are looking at the region as a whole and communicating a message to the Arab world and the Muslim world, that we are ready to initiate a new partnership based on mutual respect and mutual interest, then I think that we can make significant progress.
I don't view my memory as accurate or static - and, in autobiographical fiction, my focus is still on creating an effect, not on documenting reality - so 'autobiographical,' to me, is closer in meaning to 'fiction' than 'autobiography.'
You can do the best science in the world but unless emotion is involved it's not really very relevant. Conservation is based on emotion. It comes from the heart and one should never forget that.
All novels must be autobiographical because I am the only material that I know. All of the characters are me. But at the same time, a novel is never autobiographical even if it describes the life of the author. Literary writing is a completely different medium.
I don't think of the note in technical terms. I sing the emotion that I am feeling.
I think people are particularly interested to see who the real me is, but... different stories call for different approaches and you change based on the experience you want that person to have.
