The past of the soul is so distant! The soul does not live on the edge of time. It finds its rest in the universe imagined by reverie.
Everything at a distance turns into
poetry; distant mountains, distant
people, distant events; all become
Romantic.
But I plucked a new, different, worldly soul for myself -- maybe a soul I found in the spray thrown up by the surge of that distant African river as it plummets onto black rocks and sends up into the sun a permanent arc of a rainbow.

Hope encourages men to endure and attempt everything; in depriving them of it, or in making it too distant, you deprive them of their very soul.
The voice of God whispers in the heart

A human soul devoid of longing was a soul deformed, deprived of its highest good, sick unto death.
Soul music is soul music. It can be wrapped up in a neo soul package; it can be called hip-hop soul. But soul is soul, and it's been around; it will never go away.
This is the birth of the modern human soul. The artists are like us, not like the Neanderthals, who had no culture - and who incidentally were still roaming the landscape at the time the paintings were made. It is striking that there is a distant cultural echo that seems to reach all the way down to us, over dozens of millennia.
