I think ring rust is an excuse people use when they don't box well. — © David Haye
I think ring rust is an excuse people use when they don't box well.
I know I've been out for a while and but I'm not going to talk about ring rust or use it as an excuse. That's nothing to me. Sugar Ray Leonard was out of the ring for years and he beat Hagler.
I don't believe in ring rust. I used to believe in ring rust, but I talked to my buddy Dominic Cruz, who's a bantamweight, and he basically said it's a mindset. What you do in between in your time off determines how you're going to look when you come in there.
When you use God as an excuse to hate people and you use God as an excuse to cut people down, first of all, I think it's insulting to God.
I'll get out and do Pilates. I'll get in the ring and do some rounds of kickboxing and grappling and MMA conditioning. There's a lot of unique stuff that I do, too, that a lot of people wouldn't imagine or think about doing, like box jumps. You get a 42-inch box and dumbbells and practice working on your explosion jumping up on those boxes.
These words dropped into my childish mind as if you should accidentally drop a ring into a deep well. I did not think of them much at the time, but there came a day in my life when the ring was fished up out of the well, good as new.
I don't really believe in that ring rust stuff.
Ring rust is real. I've experienced it myself.
I play chess about four hours a day in training camp. You have to decide what move to use, or what combination of moves. I think less when I box because the reaction time is a lot quicker, but some people call me the chess boxer because they say I think too much in the ring. I take my time and they don't see the action they want. Some boxers just go in there and just throw punches and hope to win.
Ring rust doesn't affect me too much.
No fighter wants to risk getting ring rust.
I don't care how cheap the box is that you put a diamond ring in, nothing about the box diminishes the value of the content.
Anytime you think about ring rust and travel and camps back-to-back, it helps not having any bad injuries and being able to train consistently.
When you use an excuse for not accomplishing something or not completing a project, you are actually giving power to someone or something outside of yourself. Regardless of what happens today, absolutely refuse to use an excuse to get off the hook.
Rust rust rust in the engines of love and time.
There shouldn't be a death in the ring. There should never have been deaths in the ring, because people - deaths in the ring occur because they don't keep up with the records well enough. They are putting mismatches together. The people who are licensed to stop a fight, the referee and the corner, don't do it for fear that the audience is going to object to them stopping a fight.
What has happened at Guantanamo Bay... does not represent the will of the American people. I'm embarrassed about it, I think its wrong. I think it does give terrorists an unwarranted excuse to use the despicable means to hurt innocent people.
