Toast is bread made delicious and useful. Un-toasted bread is okay for children's sandwiches and sopping up barbecue sauce, but for pretty much all other uses, toast is better than bread. If I survive, I will spend my whole life at the oven door seeing that no one is denied bread and, so as to give a lesson of charity, especially those who did not bring flour.
I realized that I've had a really rocky relationship with food - it has not been a gauzy, beautiful summer of ripe melons and perfectly buttered toast.
I was so thin I could slice bread with my shoulderblades, only I seldom had bread.
A hippo sandwich is easy to make. All you do is simply take one slice of bread, one slice of cake, some mayonnaise, one onion ring, one hippopotamus, one piece of string, a dash of pepper. That ought to do it. And now comes the problem... biting into it!
You've buttered your bread, now sleep in it.
I know on which side my bread is buttered.
I do not believe in a religion that cannot wipe out the widow's tears or bring a piece of bread to the orphan's mouth.
Ministers fall like buttered slices of bread: usually on their good side.
