Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain. — © Oliver Goldsmith
Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain.
I was going to go to Auburn but I just didn't like Auburn. They left a bad taste in my mouth.
The majority of my family is Auburn fans, and I grew up watching Auburn football, and that's always who I've cheered for.
Of all sweet passions Shame is the loveliest.
I had fallen in love with Cherry as a junior in high school. When I discovered she was going to go to Auburn, I was vacillating between Alabama and Kentucky because of Babe. I eliminated Kentucky because I wanted to be as close to Auburn as I could, and Tuscaloosa is a lot closer than Lexington is.
Sweet is the rose, but grows upon a brere; Sweet is the juniper, but sharp his bough; Sweet is the eglantine, but stiketh nere; Sweet is the firbloome, but its braunches rough; Sweet is the cypress, but its rynd is tough; Sweet is the nut, but bitter is his pill; Sweet is the broome-flowre, but yet sowre enough; And sweet is moly, but his root is ill.
Look round and round upon this bare bleak plain, and see even here, upon a winter's day, how beautiful the shadows are! Alas! It is the nature of their kind to be so. The loveliest things in life... are but shadows; and they come and go, and change and fade away, as rapidly as these.
When the clouds shake their hyssops, and the rain Like holy water falls upon the plain, 'Tis sweet to gaze upon the springing grain And see your harvest born. And sweet the little breeze of melody The blackbord puffs upon the budding tree, While the wild poppy lights upon the lea And blazes 'mid the corn.
If you have love, even plain cold water is sweet.
Give the villagers village arithmetic, village geography, village history and the literary knowledge that they must use daily, i.e. reading and writing letters, etc.
Like sweet morning dew I took one look at you And it was plain to see You were my destiny
Dear bells! how sweet the sound of village bells When on the undulating air they swim!
The city is loveliest when the sweet death racket begins. Her own life lived in defiance of nature, her electricity, her frigidaires, her soundproof walls, the glint of lacquered nails, the plumes that wave across the corrugated sky. Here in the coffin depths grow the everlasting flowers sent by telegraph.
Alabama fans love Alabama football. Auburn fans love Auburn.
Never give children a chance of imagining that anything exists in isolation. Make it plain from the very beginning that all living is relationship. Show them relationships in the woods, in the fields, in the ponds and streams, in the village and in the country around it. Rub it in.
I used to live in a village, and I always loved listening to old people. Unfortunately, it was always women who were talking, because after the war, very few men were around. I spent my entire life living in the village. The village is always talking about itself; people are talking to each other as the village makes sense of itself.
Ezra Pound still lives in a village and his world is a kind of village and people keep explaining things when they live in a village.... I have come not to mind if certain people live in villages and some of my friends still appear to live in villages and a village can be cozy as well as intuitive but must one really keep perpetually explaining and elucidating?
