Our educational system just doesn't work as well as it should any more. 70% of people are never going to go to college, and we don't give them the vocational or occupational training they need before we throw them into a work force where too often they find they don't fit. The 30% that do go to college find themselves graduating with debts that may cripple them for years.

That old but always new ethic simply says we must care for more than just ourselves or our own group. We must care for our neighbor as well, and for the health of the life we share with one another. It echoes a very basic tenet of Christianity and other faiths - love your neighbor as yourself - still the most transformational ethic in history.

I fear - as far as I can tell - that most undergraduate degrees in computer science these days are basically Java vocational training. I've heard complaints from even mighty Stanford University with its illustrious faculty that basically the undergraduate computer science program is little more than Java certification.

There are jobs here in Baltimore, but the problem is we don't have skilled people. Like the Port Covington initiative - that's 20 years out. I instituted initiatives as mayor that called for equities for minorities, increase minority opportunities, training. It's a good model to duplicate. Everybody doesn't want to go to college. A lot of our vocational programs don't have the latest technology. Students should begin freshman year in high school working on a plan for graduation - either going into an apprenticeship or college.

Ultimately, I don't know if love is an organizing principle we choose or if it's innate. I'm not sure the distinction matters to me much anymore; I just care about how we can reduce unnecessary suffering. I think that means learning to love in both the micro and the macro; engaging in ethical action at the level of intimacy and friendship, but also at the vocational level through our chosen work in the world, our right livelihood.

Having taught economics courses at private vocational schools and universities, I have always had a problem with GNP as a yardstick of prosperity. GNP is improved by increases in questionable activities such as consumption of cigarettes and the production of weapons. Moreover, a substantial increase in car accidents will favorably affect GNP because more funerals, hospital visits, car repairs, and new car purchases will result.

We are entering a hyperconnected world where every boss now has more access, cheap access to cheap labor, cheap genius, cheap robot, cheap software, and then this world averages over. There is only one answer to that, and that is to get everyone as close as possible to some form of post-secondary education, it could be vocational, it can be liberal arts, it can be science and technology.
