You try to make characters you care about, and I think realism helps. Even though this is a high concept, the characters have got to be real.
Actors are the most important. Performance is what matters. Nothing matters more than the actors; they have to perform. No one else can give life to the characters. Audiences must believe the characters as real and the moments as real.
I like to think in camera, but at the last minute the most important thing is that there is something happening between the actors. But good actors can have a lot of scenes going around them but sometimes it sort of helps the performance because it takes their mind off of who they are supposed to be.
I don't think it's necessary to be an actor to get great performances out of an actor. But I do think it helps me as a director because I know what I like as an actor, and I try to get that to the actors who I'm working with.
I always have humour in my action movies. I think characters that make jokes under fire are more real. It somehow helps put you in their shoes.

Look, a lot of directors were actors, even if they were unsuccessful actors which I think is helpful. I think it's a really helpful thing for a director to have experienced that. It helps you know how to talk to actors and how to get what you need from them.
Any jokes I make I try to make sure it's on story and helps the characters and makes sense with the movie.
Try and spread a lot of love and affection around the world. The most important thing is not to 'con' the public. Be real.
