A Quote by Derek Cianfrance

The only time I judge an actor on set is if they're not failing; if they get it right all the time, I start to question it. I feel like it's too easy. — © Derek Cianfrance
The only time I judge an actor on set is if they're not failing; if they get it right all the time, I start to question it. I feel like it's too easy.
If you attempt certain things at the right time, they are easy to accomplish - in fact, they almost get done by themselves. If you undertake them before the time is right, not only will they fail, but they will often become impossible to accomplish even when the time would have been right.
If you come on the set of 'Sleepy Hollow,' and you go, 'So, is this a 'Once Upon a Time' spinoff?' That's right when we start slappin' people. It's right then. Now if you came on the set, and you were like, 'I like this show. It kinda reminds me of 'Supernatural,'' that gets you a high five.
I'm not a very methodologically pure actor. Almost every time that I start, I feel completely at sea. Always at the beginning I feel like a fraud, really, because I'm never sure how to get started.
It's easy to be an actor at 8 or 9 in the morning, but it's really important to be focused and work hard at 6 and 7 at night, after you've been on the set for 10 or 12 hours. That time counts, too.
It's just not enough time on set. That's my favorite time. I live for that time on set. I feel like that's when I'm stretching and flexing my muscles and learning how to direct better.
Can you design a Rorschach test that's going to make everyone feel something every time - and that looks like a Rorschach test? It's easy to show a picture of a kitten or a car accident. The question is, how abstract can you get and still get the audience to feel something when they don't know what's happening to them?
It's easy to get jaded. It's easy to get lazy. It's easy to get too self-centric, like, 'Why me? What about my needs?' It has nothing to do with that. But you see, you are the thing you are selling whether you are a director or an actor in this business. It's very tough. The town doesn't realize that its greatest resource is its people.
I really don't (stay calm) all the time. I just try to. Part of not just racing but in life, I try not to let the highs be too high and the lows be too low. I try to stay somewhere right in the middle. In racing it's not always easy to do. You can get too excited or overconfident when things are going good and it's easy to get too far in the ditch when things are going bad.
Every time I start a new novel, it seems like an impossible undertaking. If I tried to do too much too quickly, I would get lost and feel overwhelmed. I have to go slow, and give things a chance to take form and grow.
I'm too grateful that I continue to grow as an actor. I hope I get better. I feel like I am. But it's a roll of the dice every time you make a movie. Nobody knows.
I feel like we cheated... because you read about these other directors, just like, 'Damn! They paid dues for 10 years before they got to get behind the camera.' We cheated because technology was in the right place at the right time, and we were alive at the right age at the right time for us to take advantage of that.
Because in life, the question is not if you will have problems, but how you are going to deal with them. Stop failing backward and start failing forward!
Daymark asks the right question. So we get it right the first time. We didn't want to overbuy or underbuy. They understood our business and our data. Daymark knew exactly which models we should order - not too much, not too little.
As you set off into the world, don't be afraid to question your leaders. But don't ask too many questions at one time or that are too hard because your leaders get tired and/or cranky.
There's always a nice tune [on radio] - helps you get the dishes done . I like to get the news from time to time - not too often. I don't feel deprived.
Some people are introverts and if they don't have enough time for themselves, they don't feel right. And extroverts don't feel right with too much alone time. There are those who need walks in nature or they feel depressed. Your linchpin is the pin that makes the wheel go. If you lose it, the wheel falls apart.
